RECORDING NEWS:
311 continue to make good progress with the recording of the band's seventh studio album at the band's Hive Studios in Los Angeles. With Ron Saint Germain producing, 311 are almost half way done with the new record, which is still untitled. The band has completed recording and mixing five songs to this point. 311 now look to finish writing and rehearsing the second batch of songs before recording them in February. The recording will stretch through February, with a release tentatively scheduled for early summer.

NEW WORDS FROM NICK:
Greeting from The Hive! Things are rolling along swiftly these days around here. Having our own mixing console has enabled us to do one thing different in the recording process than we have done in the past. We have been able to jump between tracking, overdubing and mixing frequently. Normally a band does all the basic tracks, then all the vocals and overdubs, then mixes everything at the end. This time we have taken one batch of songs and finished them before moving on to the next batch. These songs are done:
  1. What Do You Do?

  2. Same Mistake Twice
  3. Reconsider Everything
  4. Still Dreaming
  5. Other Side of Things

Now we will go on to the next batch which includes:
  6. Crack the Code
  7. Time is Precious
  8. Seems Uncertain
  9. Creatures for Awhile
  10. Beyond the Gray Sky
Then there will be a final batch which includes Don't Dwell and some others.

Anyway, we're having a blast making the album which hopefully will translate to the listeners. 311 fans are the bomb.
See ya this summer! Nick

NEW WORDS FROM P-NUT:
Good day to all....Yes, we are getting this album done, it's taking a while, this is true, but, the proof is going to be in the said pudding. We are all very excited with all the songs, which are a bit more ambitious than normal,

meaning they are a little longer, cover more emotional space, and are going to be fun to play and witness. The really cool thing about having one's own studio is you can mix and record at the same time. We did these songs in batches, so, no one person had to do all their stuff in sequence. So, that means we had some songs that were ready to mix before we recorded the last few songs. And that being said, we are listening to half of the album while still putting together the final touches on the ones that are left. Very good for gettting energy on the last tracks. I can only imagine how much a 311 fan is going to apreciate this work that we've done. It's that good/great. See you on the road in May/June, thanks for checking out the ppv. Be good be god, P-NUT

NICK'S MEMORIAL THOUGHTS ON JOE STRUMMER / THE CLASH:
Joe Strummer's death was a crushing blow. He was my idol and biggest musical influence. I'm grateful to have recorded with him (Southpark soundtrack) and to have become friends (3 or 4 nights of hanging out in LA). One big regret, he asked me to sing The Specials "Message to You Rudy" at his show in Glasgow, but I couldn't make it due to a scheduling conflict. 311 and Joe's band both played in Manchester the night before (last year's European tour.) We played the small club at the University and he played the big room, a hundred feet away. He came to our tour bus to find me and we got drunk together after the show. The next night we were both in Glasgow, but I couldn't make it over to his show, because our set times overlapped. I always thought I'd get another chance. I'm really sad. Just a couple of days before he died I put up a huge Clash poster in my house. One more Joe story: The night I first met my hero was at a dinner party in '95. I noticed a boombox out on the patio where people were hanging. It had two stickers on it. One was Fender Guitars. The other was 311. When I found out it was Joe's boombox and he had that sticker I was in complete disbelief. Having his support pretty much validated my whole musical life. I'd love to see him again to thank him for his inspiration. I get emotional just thinking about it.
