HAPPY SUMMER TO ALL!!

RECORDING NEWS:
311 are now busy at work at the band's Hive Studio, writing and rehearsing new material for the next record. The band already has music for four songs and feel the creative flow is in full effect. Let the magic begin!

Saint behind the board
Joining the team, once again, is Ron Saint Germain. Saint was also the producer of "From Chaos" and the self-titled "Blue Album". 311 are very excited to have Saint back behind the board to record the new material. Saint has also done records with Tool, Bad Brains, Creed, Soundgarden, Mos Def, etc.

311 will spend May, June, July and August writing and doing pre-production. From mid September through November, the band will record the album and in December they will mix the album. Assuming everything runs according to plan, we look to release the new album in the Spring of 2003.

No song titles or album titles have surfaced as of yet, but we'll keep you posted along the way.

TOUR NEWS:
Great News!! 311 have decided to do several more weeks of touring in 2002!! The band will co-headline the Sprite-Liquid Mix Summer Tour with Jay Z. The festival (15 shows) will be a fusion of rock and hip-hop bands on two stages.
The tour runs from August 20 through September 8. Other acts that are tentatively scheduled to appear (not confirmed) include Hoobastank, Ozomatli, Nappy Roots, Quarashi, De La Soul and more to be announced soon. 311 will play a 60 minute set each night. Stay tuned for more information on this tour.

There is a good chance that 311 will also do a week of warm-up shows before starting the festival tour. We'll keep you updated via the Happenings and Tour pages of the website. 311 look at this tour as a good opportunity to take a break from the studio and to perform and evolve the new material before a live audience. Should be great!

WORDS FROM NICK:
Whatsup everyone! We’ve been making leaps and bounds at the Hive studio. We’ve already got some finished songs and lots of song fragments. I’m a little hesitant to describe the sound of the new music because sometimes people tend to get the wrong idea. I will say that I’m loving powerful, melodic music both in my writing and listening tastes. Lately I’ve been listening to Soundgarden, System of a Down, Smashing Pumpkins, and the Beatles. Also, new albums from Echobrain and Weezer have been in rotation on my iPod. I added a whole cd full of songs by various artists to the 311 Radio if you want to check that out. I haven’t been listening to a ton of rap or electronic music lately. It will be nice, though, to get back into that on the Liquid Mix tour.

In studio news, we’re excited about completing our studio. In the past we have been forced to do some of the drums and the mixing at another studio, because we didn’t have the huge expensive mixing board that we needed to do it properly. That’s about to change. We’re going to take the plunge and buy a 72 channel Neve mixing board. It will be our dream studio once it is fully implemented.

What else... I just want to say that music is such a beautiful thing. For me, listening to music is just as fun as making it. I can find something to fit my mood to listen to, because music can express anything. There will always be new artists and songs to discover. All one needs to do is look beyond what is popular and find their own mix. When I write a song, I’m filling in a gap. I’m making a song for myself and everyone to listen to that fills the vacancy of a tune to express something that needs to be said. I don’t mean to get all metaphysical about it, but I do feel that the best songs write themselves. They are fighting to come out. They have personality and a will to live almost like a living being. The only thing we, as artists, need to do is have our hands on a guitar to give the songs life. Ok, I’m rambling. What I’m trying to say is that when everything comes together, it is such a beautiful thing. The writing, the playing, the recording, the fans listening to the recording, and finally experiencing it all together in a live setting. What a wonderful thing to spend ones life pursuing!!! Thank you for the opportunity to do that. You guys are a crucial part of the circle.
Nick

311 PARTY BOAT:
A dozen radio stations nationwide recently selected contest winners for a special 311 event. The winners (about 50) from all across the country were flown into Marina Del Rey, California and put up in a waterfront hotel for a weekend stay courtesy of 311 and their record label, Volcano. On Saturday, May 18 the winners took a three hour sail with the members of 311 on a 100 foot yacht named "Mojo". On the top level of the yacht, 311 performed a special acoustic set which included the songs "Prisoner", "Beautiful Disaster", "1,2,3", "Amber", "Purpose", "You Wouldn't Beleive", "Down", "Champagne", and "All Mixed Up". The band and contest winners also enjoyed food, drinks and some scenic views of the coastline, including some playful seals that were following the yacht. (Thanks to Troy Augusto and Joe Poindexter for the photos).

LAST CALL WITH CARSON DALY:
On Friday, April 26, 311 visited NBC studios, in Los Angeles, for a performance on "Last Call with Carson Daly".
311 play acoustic set aboard Mojo
The show, which usually tapes in New York, recorded several shows in Los Angeles. Carson Daly (a long-time fan of the band, because he used to be a DJ at L.A.'s KROQ radio station) invited 311 to join the show. The room in which the show was recorded was the same sound stage that hosted The Johnny Carson Show for many, many years. So it was only fitting that Johnny Carson's sideman, Ed McMahon, was the other special guest. Ed mistakingly introduced 311 as 3LW, which didn't go over too well with the packed house of 311 fans, but it was pretty funny. 311 performed their new single, "Amber" and their hardcore thank-you "Down". Over 100 fans from the LA Street Team were part of the studio audience. The show aired on NBC on May 13 and again on the E! channel on May 14. Hope you caught it.
